Dumka, Jharkhand, February 3, 2025 – The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), the ruling party in Jharkhand, has passed a 50-point resolution rejecting the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), and the National Register of Citizens (NRC). The decision was announced during the party’s 46th foundation day celebration at Gandhi Maidan in Dumka.
The resolution states that the CAA, UCC, and NRC will not be implemented in Jharkhand, reinforcing the party’s commitment to protecting the rights of all communities. The CAA, passed in 2019, provides a pathway to Indian citizenship for non-Muslim minorities from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan who entered India before December 31, 2014. While the law aims to support persecuted religious minorities, critics argue it discriminates against Muslims.
The UCC proposes a uniform set of personal laws for all citizens, replacing religious-based personal laws, while the NRC seeks to document all legal citizens of India. Both measures have faced opposition from various political and social groups across the country.
JMM’s resolution highlights its firm stance against these initiatives, emphasizing its dedication to secularism and minority rights. This move is expected to impact political discussions ahead of upcoming elections, as opposition to these laws gains momentum in several states.
With rising debates over citizenship and identity, Jharkhand’s decision to reject the CAA, UCC, and NRC is likely to influence national conversations on these policies.
